Lap Counting / Transponders
EVERON (Electric Vehicle Energy Research of Nebraska) uses a transponder system to count laps. It is a RaceResult brand system. https://www.raceresult.com/en-us/home/index.php
Detailed info on the system can be found here.
https://www.raceresult.com/en-us/documents/RR_System_Datasheet.pdf
We use the active system with the blue USB timing box, and the red Active Pro transponders. (page 3)
More details on the individual transponders on page 11-12.
More details on the USB timing box on page 14.
Benefits of this system are:
- No yearly subscriptions
- One time cost
- Transponders have a low cost
- Timing box has internal battery and can count up to 1000 laps incase of power outage with computer
The lap count, lap time, current time, and average time are displayed on a monitor, and streamed via youtube. Here is an example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH6BxCyJ8TY lap timing starts at 40:00 of the video. This allows everyone to see all of the data during the race, and allows people to follow the race if they cannot make it to watch.
Post race data is then posted to the website. Example: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hpGCaNbACw7hDtBuxmOeunu4bo4Prnj9/view
A computer is necessary to run the software, but it doesn't have to be extremely powerful. You can download the software for free to experiment with it prior to purchasing any hardware. https://www.raceresult.com/en-us/software/index.php
We also use the Active Management Box (green box) to put the transponders to sleep when not in use. This extends the battery life.
Transponders have made a huge difference in our program. Prior to transponders, races were delayed until enough lap counters were found and educated. Lap counts were often questioned. Transponders have made everything transparent in real time, and with the ability to look at race data after the race, you can learn a lot about your performance along with your competition.
